MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jeremy Green posted a game-high 26 points and Keyser outrebounded University 42-18, but turnover troubles by the Golden Tornado led to a three-point Hawks victory Monday in the University Holiday Tournament opening day action.
Green finished with 26 points and missed a double-double by one rebound. Preston Hartman led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds, and did have a double-double by adding 13 points. Matt Wilmer scored 12 points, while Maverick Nelson and Wes Stullenbarger both put up nine.
While Keyser controlled the rebounding, they also committed 27 turnovers.
“We were behind for most of the evening, but were never out of it,” said Keyser Head Coach Gary Liston. “It’s just too hard to play catch-up when you are turning the ball over.”
The Tornado was behind by two points after one quarter and trailed by seven at halftime. It was a six-point Hawks advantage going into the fourth period, but Keyser tied the score at 71 with 43 seconds left.
After a Keyser foul, University took a one-point lead. Keyser missed its next shot and was forced to foul again and went down 74-71. The Golden Tornado had two three-point shots on its final possession, but failed to make either.
Keyser (2-2) plays James Wood today at 4:15.
