KEYSER, W.Va. — The game was close early, but a strong defensive effort in the second quarter broke the game open as fourth-ranked Keyser defeated Northern 58-33 Wednesday evening at Keyser High School.
After leading 10-6 after one quarter, Keyser held Northern scoreless for more than five minutes in the second to open up a 20-11 lead by halftime. In the second half, Keyser was just too quick and athletic for Northern as it continued to widen the lead to 40-26 entering the fourth quarter before taking the 25-point win.
Jeremy Green’s double-double led Keyser with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Preston Hartman had 13 rebounds to go with his seven points. Matt Wilmer was solid all around with seven points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Maverick Nelson was also in double figures for the Tornado with 13 points.
Thomas Holtschnieder led Northern with eight points.
Keyser also won the JV game 62-43. R.C. Pratt led Keyser with 16 points, and Cody Humberson had 18 for Northern.
Keyser (4-2) will be on the road Friday against Berkeley Springs. Northern (4-5) hosts Frankfort on Saturday.

Keyser Stymies Northern, 58-33
KEYSER — The Keyser Golden Tornado held the Northern Huskies without a field goal for over ten minutes in the first half and used a pair of second-half runs to build a comfortable lead en route to a 58-33 win at Tornado Alley Wednesday night.
Jeremy Green paced the Keyser effort with 14 points and ten rebounds, with Maverick Nelson close behind with 13 points. Matt Wilmer had seven points, six assists and four steals.
Thomas Holtschneider led Northern with eight points.
Both teams came out cold; Green picked up the game's first basket on a fade-away baseline jumper with 5:49 left in the first quarter, then back-to-back Northern layups gave the Huskies a small lead before Green hit a pair at the foul line with 3:42 left to tie the game at four.
Matt Gibson re-established the Husky lead with a pair of foul shots with 2:58 left in the first quarter, but the Golden Tornado finished the quarter on a 6-0 run.
After a Wes Washington free throw with 2:54 left, Maverick Nelson hit a three from the left wing to give Keyser a 8-6 lead at the 2:15 mark, then a Preston Hartman layup with under a minute to go off a nice baseline feed from Nelson pushed the cushion to four to end the quarter.
Washington picked a Husky pocket and went untouched for a layup ten seconds into the second quarter.
Jarell Ross hit a six-footer at the 7:24 mark, then Washington tallied another layup at 7:08. Keyser led, 16-6. Hartman continued the Tornado surge with a layup from the left block with five-and-a-half minutes left in the half. Northern finally ended a drought of over ten minutes from the field when Dylan Miller hit a jump shot from the foul line. A pair of Holtschneider free throws pulled the Huskies back within single digits, 18-10, with 1:49 left in the second quarter.
Hartman finished out the Keyser scoring for the first half with a second-chance bucket with 47 seconds left. To close out the half, Northern's Trevor Tombley hit the first of two free throws with 4.6 seconds left. Keyser led at the half, 20-11.
Hartman led all scorers with six first-half points; Washington was close behind with five.
The Huskies cut the lead to seven with fifteen seconds gone in the third quarter on a ten-foot jump shot from Ed Herpel, but Keyser re-established their nine-point cushion when Green found Nelson in transition for a layup.
After a Rayner stick-back for Northern, the Golden Tornado found the accelerator.
Buckets by Green, Wilmer, Hartman, and Wilmer again propelled the KHS lead to 30-15 with 4:23 left in the third quarter. A Holtschneider layup out of a Northern timeout halted the run, but Wes Stullenbarger picked up a layup in transition, then turned provider, losing a Husky defender with a pump-fake and slotting the ball to Jeremy Green for a six-foot jump shot.
Then it was Green to Nelson with 2:25 left in the third quarter to give Keyser their biggest lead of the night so far at 36-17.
The Huskies picked up their play, however, pouring in the next seven points to cut the lead to 36-24 with 1:15 left in the quarter, but that was as close as they could get. Nelson ended the run with a layup, then the teams traded foul shots the rest of the quarter. Keyser led 40-26 after three periods. After Northern pulled within 12 points on a pair of foul shots, the Golden Tornado went on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach at 47-28 with 4:40 left. Green then scored six straight Keyser points to push the lead above 20.
Playing predominantly junior varsity players the final few minutes, the Golden Tornado led by as many at 26 and cruised to a 58-33 win.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday night but was pushed back a day due to inclement weather.

Keyser Defeats James Wood in Holiday Tournament consolation game, 66-55
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Keyser trailed the entire first half but rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat James Wood (Va.) in the consolation game of the University High Holiday Tournament.
Keyser trailed 21-7 after one quarter and 32-23 at halftime. The Golden Tornado took their first lead in the final minute of the third quarter on a Preston Hartman basket and extended the lead in the fourth. Keyser converted key free throws to fend off a late surge from James Wood, which pulled within four with a minute to play.
Jeremy Green had 23 points and seven rebounds for Keyser. Hartman finished 19 points, Maverick Nelson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Matt Wilmer added eight points, five steals, and nine assists.
Keyser (3-2) will host Northern on Tuesday.

Keyser wins consolation game in Holiday Tournament, 66-55
MORGANTOWN - Keyser bounced back from a first round loss to host University with a much needed win over Winchester, Va.’s James Wood last night in Morgantown.
The 66-55 victory was in doubt throughout much of the contest when Keyser fell behind by 14 points after a period of play. The Colonels roared out of the gate to take a 21-7 lead after eight minutes as Keyser couldn’t buy a bucket, and held a nine-point lead at intermission at 32-23.
Keyser was able to hold Wood to just seven points while scoring 18 of its’ own in the third period.
The Golden Tornado took their first lead at the end of the third quarter when Matt Wilmer dished out one of his team-high nine assists to Preston Hartman, who converted two of his 19 points on the night.
Keyser would never trail again, but Wood was able to come within two possessions late at 59-55 after a Matt Dallman three-point field goal.
Jeremy Green led the locals for the second consecutive night with 23 points and seven rebounds on 11 field goals and a freebie.
Hartman totaled his 19 on eight shots, two from behind the arc, and 1-of-2 shooting from the line.
Maverick Nelson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, and Wilmer added eight points to his nine dimes.
Keyser (3-2) will host Northern Garrett on Tuesday.

“We were behind for most of the evening, but were never out of it,” said Keyser Head Coach Gary Liston. “It’s just too hard to play catch-up when you are turning the ball over.”

Golden Tornado Beats Falcons, 74-29
Keyser beats Frankfort 74-29
KEYSER, W.Va. — Keyser’s defense smothered Frankfort with its speed and quickness Tuesday evening in an easy win for the Golden Tornado.
Keyser limited the Falcons to four points in the first quarter, and six in both the third and fourth periods. Frankfort got almost half of its final total in a 13-point second quarter. Keyser, on the other hand, got 14 points in the first and had 39 by halftime. The Tornado carried a 32-point lead into the final quarter.
Matt Wilmer had a game-high 17 points for Keyser, and Preston Hartman ended the evening with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Maverick Nelson and Jeremy Green both had seven rebounds, with Nelson scoring 12 points, and Green getting nine. Wes Washington scored only two points, but contributed with eight assists and four steals.
Brian Bills scored seven points to lead Frankfort.
Peyton Hartman scored 10 points in Keyser’s 39-33 win over the junior varsity game. Austin Cook scored seven for Frankfort.
Keyser (2-1) plays University Monday in the University Holiday Tournament. Frankfort (1-3) begins play in the Hampshire Tournament Monday.
