KHS loses second-half lead, game to Northern

ACCIDENT, Md. - Kory Gibson scored 27 points to lead five players in double figures and Keyser let another second-half led slip away as the Northern Huskies defeated the Golden Tornado, 82-72, on Tuesday evening at Northern.

The game was close throughout the first three quarters, as Keyser held a 23-20 lead after the first period and took a four-point lead, 43-39, at the half.

Northern trimmed its deficit to a single point, 59-58, entering the fourth quarter and then outscored Keyser, 24-13, over the final eight minutes to secure the 10-point victory.

In three of their four losses this season, Keyser (5-4) was either tied or led at the half. The Golden Tornado also blew two second-half leads against Mountain Ridge and Hampshire before winning in overtime.

Northern did most of its damage from beyond the 3-point line. The Huskies made 29 field goals on the evening, with 14 coming from beyond the arc.

Gibson had five 3-pointers while Jeff Smith, who scored all of his 14 points in the first half, connected on four.

Garrett Gulledge added 17 points for Northern (4-4), while Thomas Holtshudder and Ed Harpel each had 10.

Jeremy Green led Keyser with 27 points and 19 rebounds, while Preston Hartman had 23 points and 13 boards.

Taige Redman chipped in with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

In the JV game, Keyser came out on top, 52-43.

Wes Washington led the Golden Tornado with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, while R.C. Pratt added 13 points and 10 boards.

Keyser will return to action this Friday evening when it hosts Berkeley Springs as part of a triple-header.

The KHS freshmen will take the court first at 4:15 p.m., followed by the JV team at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m

The Keyser Golden Tornado rallied from an early 15-point deficit and then had to hold on at the end to beat the Bishop Walsh Spartans, 66-60, on Monday evening at Tornado Alley.

Bishop Walsh came out firing and raced out to a 21-6 lead before Keyser's Preston Hartman hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter to make it a 21-9 game.

The Golden Tornado began to chip away at the Spartans' lead in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 18-11 to trail by just 5 points, 32-27, at the half.

Keyser continued its comeback in the third quarter, as Hartman tipped in a missed shot to give the Golden Tornado their first lead of the game, 42-41, late in the period.

Keyser took a 46-41 lead into the final quarter and built a 56-46 lead with 5 minutes left in the game.

But Bishop Walsh's Kamran Khataian nearly brought the Spartans back by himself.

Khataian, who finished with 20 points on 6 three-pointers and two free throws, hit a shot from beyond the arc to make it 56-49 at the 4:40 mark.

After a Keyser miss, Khataian hit another 3-pointer to pull Bishop Walsh to within four points, 56-52, with 4:13 to play.

After another empty Golden Tornado possession, Eric Diamond scored his only two points of the night to pull the Spartans to within a bucket, 56-54, at the 3:45 mark.

Jeremy Green, who led all scorers with 27 points, hit two free throws to put Keyser ahead, 58-54, and Taige Redman hit 1 of 2 foul shots for a 5-point Keyser lead.

Khataian then hit another 3-pointer at the 1:22 mark to make it a 2-point game once again, 59-57, but Bishop Walsh would get no closer the rest of the way.

Green also had 10 rebounds and 2 assists to go along with his game-high total, while Hartman finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds and Matt Wilmer had 11 points and 5 boards.

Alex Trivanovic had 18 points for Bishop Walsh (4-8) and Myles Clifford added 13 points.

Keyser also won the JV game, 56-46.

Wesley Stullenbarger led the Golden Tornado with 19 points, while Dillon D'Atri led Bishop Walsh with 16 points.

Keyser (5-3) returns to action this evening when it travels to take on Northern at 7:30 p.m.

KEYSER - Keyser used a strong third quarter to offset a poor start Monday evening as the Golden Tornado beat Bishop Walsh 66-60 despite having just five players score.The Spartans used a hot hand to grab a 21-9 first quarter lead, and were up as many as 15 points. Myles Clifford, who finished with 13 points, had three three-pointers in the opening period. Alex Trivanovic, who would score 13 points, added six points in the first quarter.

Keyser was able to close the lead to five points by halftime, when the score sat at 32-27. By the end of the third quarter, Keyser had taken a 46-41 lead.The Tornado got ahead by as many as 11 points in the fourth, but Kamran Khataian made four of his six threes to pull the Spartans as close as two points.Jeremy Green led Keyser with 27 points, but Preston Hartman had a monster performancce with 27 points and 17 rebounds. Green also had a double-double by grabbing 10 boards. Matt Wilmer finished with 11 points.

Keyser won the jayvee game 56-46 with Wes Stallinbarger scoring 19 in the win. Dylan D'Atri had 16 for BW.Keyser (5-3) will face Northern tonight on the road. Bishop Walsh (4-8) will play at Berkeley Springs on Wednesday.
