Keyser Whips Petersburg, 82-44

KEYSER, W.Va. - Matt Wilmer got the job done on both ends of the court Tuesday night to lead fifth-ranked Keyser to an 82-44 thumping of Petersburg in their West Virginia Class AA sectional championship game Tuesday evening.

Wilmer finished with a game best 21 points, and added eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Jeremy Green had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, and Preston Hartman scored 15 points. Jarell Ross added eight points and nine rebounds, and Wes Washington dished out eight assists for Keyser.

Derek Miller had 16 points and Marcus Hahn 10 for Petersburg

The Golden Tornado clung to a 16-10 lead following the first period, and was in control at 37-20 at halftime. The score was 58-33 at the end of the third quarter.

Keyser (12-10) is off until Thursday, March 6, when it will play the winner of Frankfort/Berkeley Springs in the Region 2 championship.

The Vikings finished the season with a 9-13 record.

Keyser Wins Sectional; Defeats Vikings 82-44

The Keyser Golden Tornado, after an up-and-down regular season under first-year head coach Gary Liston, got their playoff run off to a great start with an 82-44 victory over the Petersburg Vikings to win the Class AA Region II, Section I title Tuesday evening at Tornado Alley.

Keyser, after enduring a stretch in which it lost 5 of 6 games, has now won 4 of its last 5 games and hopes to carry that momentum into next week’s Region II title game.

Frankfort and Berkeley Springs will play for the Section II championship this evening in Short Gap at 7 p.m., with the winner taking on Keyser on Thursday, March 6, at East Hardy High School for the right to play in the Class AA state playoffs.

On Tuesday, the Golden Tornado dominated both ends of the court, nearly doubling up Petersburg in field goals, 37-19.

Keyser took a 16-10 lead after the first period and then blew the game wide open in the second frame, outscoring the Vikings 21-10 to take a 37-20 lead into the half.

The Golden Tornado kept the heat up in the third quarter, scoring another 21 points to take a commanding 58-33 lead into the final period.

Matt Wilmer had a solid all-around game for Keyser, recording a game-high 21 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a blocked shot.

Jeremy Green had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Preston Hartman added 15 points.

Jarell Ross and Taige Redman each had 8 points for the Golden Tornado (12-10), with Ross also pulling down 9 rebounds.

Wes Washington dished out a team-high 8 assists.

Derek Miller led Petersburg with 16 points and Marcus Hahn added 10.

With the loss, the Vikings finish up their season at 9-13.

Keyser Defeated by Fort Hill, 95-59

CUMBERLAND - Five Fort Hill players scored in double figures and four posted double-doubles as the top-ranked Sentinels turned in their finest performance of the season in rolling past Keyser, 95-59, to clinch the championship of the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference Tuesday night at Fort Hill.Jordan Brooks led Fort Hill (19-2 overall, 13-0 AMAC) with 26 points and 10 assists. Cory McCarty scored 14 points, Darren Graham scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds, Jordan Helmick scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds, while Ryan Brooks scored 10 points and had 10 assists.

The Sentinels raced to a 27-11 first-quarter lead, led 46-30 at the half, and took a 67-45 lead in the final quarter, before outscoring the Golden Tornado 28-14 to conclude the evening."We just got out to a great start," said Fort Hill head coach Todd Eirich. "We passed the ball extremely well with 28 assists on the night, which is pretty good for a varsity game. I'm happy about that. We played a great team game. In fact, it's the best we've played all season."Five players in double figures and four with double-doubles. That's very, very good, and I'm just real happy with the way we played."

Keyser (11-10 overall, 6-8 AMAC) was led by Preston Hartman and Matt Wilmer with 16 points apiece, and Jeremy Green with 12 points.Fort Hill won the junior varsity game, 49-37, as Dakota Welsh scored 28 points. For Keyser, R.C. Pratt and Wesley Stullenberger both scored 10 points.Fort Hill will conclude the regular season Tuesday at Northern. Keyser is at Petersburg on Thursday.

Fort Hill Defeats Keyser, 95-59

Jordan Brooks scored a game-high 26 points and the Fort Hill Sentinels rode a 27-point first quarter to a 95-59 victory over the Keyser Golden Tornado on Tuesday evening in Cumberland.

It was the second big victory for the Sentinels over the Golden Tornado this season, as Fort Hill won 67-41 in Keyser on January 23.

Much like that first meeting — when Fort Hill jumped out to a 20-9 first-quarter lead — the Sentinels served notice in the opening period on Tuesday, running out to a 27-11 advantage.

Keyser played Fort Hill even in the second quarter, as each team scored 19 points to give the Sentinels a 46-30 lead at the break.

Fort Hill outscored the Golden Tornado 21-15 in the third quarter to take a 67-45 lead, and the Sentinels put the game away with a 28-point fourth quarter.

Darren Graham and Cory McCarty each had 14 points for Fort Hill, which improved to 20-2 overall and 13-0 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference.

Preston Hartman and Matt Wilmer each had 16 points to lead Keyser, with Hartman pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.

Jeremy Green added 14 points and 3 steals, while Tyler Logsdon and Wes Washington each dished out 3 assists.

Fort Hill also won the JV game, 49-37.

Wes Stullenbarger and R.C. Pratt each had 10 points to lead Keyser, while Langston Hines added 5 assists.

Keyser (11-10) will return to action this Thursday for its regular-season finale at Petersburg at 7:30 p.m

Keyser Routs Northern, 83-55

KEYSER - Three Keyser Golden Tornado players recorded double-doubles Monday night as Keyser throttled Northern 83-55 at Keyser High School.

Preston Hartman, Jeremy Green and Wes Washington all had double-doubles as Keyser expanded on a two-point lead after the first quarter to lead 40-27 at the half, and 63-41 by the end of the third.

Washington dished out a remarkable 15 assists, grabbed three rebounds and swiped one steal to go with his 11 points. Hartman concluded the contest with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Green totaled 18 points, 10 boards and three steals. Matt Wilmer made it four Tornadoes in double figures by posting a game-high 20 points.

Northern's Kory Gibson finished with a game-high 23 points and Jeff Smith finished with 13.

Keyser won the jayvee game 50-33. Wes Stallinbarger scored 23 points in the win, and Steven Holtschneider had 11 for Northern.

Keyser improves to 11-9 overall and is now 6-7 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference. The Tornado plays a tripleheader at Fort Hill tonight beginning with the 4:15 freshmen game.

Northern (9-10, 4-7 AMAC) will play at Mountain Ridge on Friday.

Keyser rolls over Northern, 83-55

Keyser, W.Va. Freshman point guard Wes Washington recorded a double-double for the best game of his young varsity career in Keyser’s 83-55 victory over the Northern Huskies on Monday evening at Tornado Alley.

Washington scored 11 points and dished out 15 assists for the Golden Tornado, who improved to 11-9 with the victory.

Keyser held a slim 15-13 lead after the first period but then used a 25-point second quarter to take a 40-27 lead into the half.

The Golden Tornado then followed up with a 23-point third quarter to take a commanding 22-point lead into the final frame.

Matt Wilmer led Keyser with 20 points while Preston Hartman and Jeremy Green each had a double-double.

Hartman went for 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Green added 18 points, 10 boards and 3 steals.

Kory Gibson led Northern with a game-high 23 points and Jeff Smith added 13.
Keyser was also victorious in the JV game, 50-33.

Wes Stullenbarger had a game-high 23 points to lead Keyser, while R.C. Pratt had 9 points and 5 assists.

Tony Amtower pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and Tyler Fraley had 3 steals.
Steven Holtschneider led Northern with 11 points.

Keyser will return to action this evening when caps off a tripleheader at Fort Hill.

The Golden Tornado freshmen will kick things off at 4:15 p.m., followed by the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30.

Northern (10-10) returns to action this Friday at Mountain Ridge.

Green sparks Keyser to Victory

BERKELEY SPRINGS — Keyser rallied behind Jeremy Green to take the lead in the closing minutes of the third period after trailing the entire game and beat Berkeley Springs 65-53 on Friday night.

Green made a lay-up with 2:53 left in the third period to give Keyser its first lead at 36-34. The junior guard had seven points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in a three-minute span to give the Golden Tornado a 42-36 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Preston Hartman led Keyser with 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Green finished with 15 points and also had eight rebounds. Wes Washingto dished out six assists and had four steals.

Berkeley Springs was led by Joe Wright with 18 points and Ryan Redick with 12.

The Indians led 11-9 after the first period and had a 31-20 advantage at halftime.

The Berkeley Springs junior varsity team won 54-52 as Robert Willard scored 20 points. Keyser was led by Wes Stullenbarger with 20 points and R.C. Pratt with 15.

Keyser (10-9) will host Northern on Monday night.

Green leads Keyser rally over Berkeley Springs, 65-53

BERKELEY SPRINGS -

Jeremy Green keyed a big third-quarter comeback as the Keyser Golden Tornado rallied to defeat the Berkeley Springs Indians, 65-53, on Friday evening at Berkeley.

Keyser (10-9) erased an 11-point halftime deficit with a 22-point third quarter, with Green scoring 11 of his 15 points in that period.
Keyser trailed 11-9 after the first quarter and was outscored 20-11 in the second frame to trail 31-20 at the half.

The Golden Tornado then held Berkeley to just 5 points in the third quarter as Keyser took the lead late in the period.
Trailing 34-33 at the 2:57 mark, Green scored on a layup to give Keyser its first lead of the evening.

Just seconds later, Green took a pass from Jarell Ross and converted another bucket for a 37-34 Keyser lead at the 2:40 mark.

Ross then came up with a steal and assisted on another Green basket to make it 39-24, and a free throw by Green made it 40-34 with 2:16 remaining in the period.

Ross then made a basket of his own and Berkeley’s Lenny Roach countered to make it 42-36 entering the fourth quarter.

The Golden Tornado would not relinquish the lead after that.

Preston Hartman led Keyser with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, while Matt Wilmer added 10 points and Green had 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to go with his point total.

Freshman point guard Wes Washington contributed 6 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.

Joe Wright led Berkeley with 18 points and Ryan Redick added 12.

Berkeley won the JV game, 54-52.

Robert Willard led the Indians with 20 points, while Wes Stullenbarger led the Golden Tornado, also with 20 points.

R.C. Pratt added 15 points and Daniel Zinn had a team-high 9 rebounds.

Keyser will return to action the Monday for a home makeup game against Northern at 7:30 p.m.

Keyser Defeats Vikings, 68-53

A game after falling below the .500 mark for the first time this season, the Keyser Golden Tornado evened their record once again with a 68-53 victory over the Petersburg Vikings last Saturday at Tornado Alley.

Jeremy Green and Preston Hartman each recorded a double-double as Keyser improved to 9-9.

Green went for a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Hartman added 20 points and pulled down a game-high 16 boards.

Caleb Jones had 8 points for Keyser, while Wes Washington contributed a team-high 10 assists to go along with 3 steals.

Keyser made quick working of the visiting Vikings (6-12), jumping out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter.

The Golden Tornado led 37-20 at the half and 49-26 after three quarters of play.
Ryan Wratchford led Petersburg with 15 points, while Marcus Hahn added 13 points and Derek Miller had 12.

Keyser also won the JV game, 66-56.

Wes Stullenbarger led Keyser with 23 points, while Petersburg was led by Matt Mongold’s game-high 27.

Keyser was scheduled to host the Northern Huskies on Tuesday evening, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. A make-up date as yet to be determined.

The Golden Tornado’s next scheduled game is Friday at Berkeley Springs at 7:30 p.m.

Keyser blows by Petersburg, 68-53

KEYSER — Jeremy Green and Preston Hartman combined for 41 points and 30 rebounds, and freshman Wes Washington had 10 assists in his first varsity start as Keyser roared past Petersburg, 68-53, in their Potomac Valley Conference game Saturday evening.

Green scored a game-high 21 points and had 14 rebounds, and Hartman had 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds as Keyser (9-9) snapped a three-game slide. Caleb Jones added eight points and Washington, moved up from the jayvee team, had 10 assists, three steals and three points.

Keyser led 18-5 after the first quarter and 37-20 at halftime. It was 49-36 heading into the final eight minutes.

Ryan Wratchford had 15 points, Marcus Hahn 13 and Derek Miller 12 for Petersburg (6-12).

Keyser won the jayvee game 66-56. Wesley Stullenbarger had 23 points for Keyser and Matt Mongold had a game-high 27 for Petersburg.

Both teams play again Tuesday. Keyser hosts Northern and Petersburg entertains Pendleton County.

Keyser Defeated by Miners, 54-38

FROSTBURG, Md. - Keyser scored in single digits in each of the final three quarters and the Golden Tornado posted their lowest output of the season in a 54-38 loss to the Mountain Ridge Miners on Wednesday evening in Frostburg.

After scoring 12 points in the opening quarter, Keyser scored 9, 8 and 9 points over the final three periods en route to the 16-point loss.

Keyser's 38 points were 25 points below its season average of 63.4. The Golden Tornado have now lost five of their last six games to drop below the .500 mark for the first time this season at 8-9.


The Miners held an 18-12 lead after the opening period but managed just six points in the second quarter as Keyser cut its deficit to three points, 24-21, at the half.

Mountain Ridge pushed its lead out to double digits, 39-29, heading into the fourth quarter and then outscored Keyser 15-9 over the final eight minutes to cement the victory.

Ryan Delaney led all scorers with 16 points and Jeremy Shingler added 10 to lead Mountain Ridge.



Matt Wilmer led Keyser with 13 points, while Jeremy Green added 10 points and Preston Hartman contributed 8 points, 14 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.

Keyser won the JV game, 46-26.

R.C. Pratt led the Golden Tornado with 17 points and Wes Stullenbarger added 10.



Keinen Harper led Mountain Ridge with 14.

Keyser returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Petersburg at 7:30 p.m.

Mountain Ridge Defeats Keyser, 54-38

FROSTBURG - Ryan Delaney scored 16 points and Mountain Ridge outscored Keyser 30-17 during the second half for a 54-38 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference win Wednesday evening.

Delaney hit five field goals and went 5-for-6 from the foul line to help the Miners (9-8 overall, 5-5 AMAC) snap a three-game skid.

Jeremy Shingler added 10 points and David Hobel and Sammy Brackett had nine each.

"It was a good team win for us. Everyone played hard," said Mountain Ridge coach Dave Hobel. "Everyone played and everyone played a part in this win."

Matt Wilmer had 13 points and Jeremy Green 10 for Keyser (8-9, 5-7).

Keyser won the jayvee game 46-26, with R.C. Pratt scoring 17 points.

Keyser also won the freshman game, 58-44, with Peyton Hartman scoring 20 points. Dylan Harden and Jacob Miller had 13 for Mountain Ridge.

The Miners travel to Northern on Friday and Keyser hosts Petersburg on Saturday.

Spartans Beat Keyser, 96-75

CUMBERLAND - Bishop Walsh put on a clinic offensively in the second quarter, outscoring Keyser in the period, 30-14, in defeating the Golden Tornado Tuesday night at Bishop Walsh.The Spartans, who trailed 21-18 entering the second quarter, led at the half, 48-35, and inched the difference up to 70-53 after three, never losing their offensive groove.Alex Trivanovic led the Spartans with 26 points, while Myles Clifford scored 19, Kamran Khataian 18, and Eric Diamond 12. Khataian had seven assists, Diamond six rebounds and Clifford four steals.For Keyser, Preston Hartman scored 30 points, with four of his 11 field goals being three-pointers. Jeremy Green hit for 16 for the Tornado, while Matt Wilmer scored 13.Keyser won the junior varsity game.Bishop Walsh (8-11) will host Meyersdale today at 7 p.m. in a make-up game from last Friday. Bishop Walsh came within four points of the century mark and Keyser dropped down to the .500 mark as the Spartans defeated the Golden Tornado, 96-75, on Tuesday evening in Cumberland.Aleks Trivanovic scored 26 points to lead three Spartans in double figures as Bishop Walsh avenged 66-60 loss in Keyser on January 7.The Golden Tornado led Tuesday's high-scoring affair, 21-18, after one period of play, but the Spartans charged ahead in the second quarter, scoring 30 points to take a 48-35 lead into the break.
Bishop Walsh increased its lead to 17 points, 70-53, after three quarters and never looked back.Miles Clifford had 19 points and Kamron Khataian added 18 for Bishop Walsh.Preston Hartman recorded a double-double with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Keyser, which fell to 8-8 with the loss.

On Monday evening, Keyser lost a close game to the Southern Rams, 57-56.Jeff Stern hit the second of two free throws with 6.8 seconds remaining to lift Southern to victory.Stern led the Rams with 20 points, while Drew Proudfoot added 14 points and Dan Shockey had 11.
Wilmer led Keyser with 21 points, while Hartman added 14 and Green had 11.Southern also won the JV game, 43-37.Joe Kisselovich led Southern with 19 points and Calvin Hilliard added 10.

Southern Edges Keyser, 57-56

OAKLAND - Jeff Stem hit the second of a two-shot foul with 6.8 seconds left to lift third-ranked Southern to its sixth win in a row.

After a series of timeouts were called following Stem's free throw, Keyser threw the ball away on its possession and the Rams regained possession to win the game.

Stem led the Rams (8-6, 7-3) with 20 points, while Drew Proudfoot scored 14 and Dan Shockey 11. Jordan Pacella added eight.

For Keyser (8-7, 5-6), Matt Wilmer led the way with 21 points, while Preston Hartman hit six field goals, including two three-point goals, to score 14 points. Jeremy Green added 11.

Southern won the junior varsity game, 43-37, with Joe Kisselovich scoring 19 for the Rams, and Calvin Hilliard scoring 10. Wes Washington scored 10 for Keyser.

Southern hosts Petersburg today.

Keyser Beats Hampshire, 57-53

ROMNEY — Matt Wilmer scored 20 points and Preston Hartman had a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds as Keyser held on to beat Hampshire in an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference game at Hampshire.

Jeremy Green also had a double-double for the Golden Tornado with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cody Spotts dished out five assists.

Hampshire was led by Robbie Miller with 21 points. Michael Clark and Will Hughes added 10 points each.

Keyser led 20-16 after one period and 32-21 at halftime. Hampshire cut the margin to two points, 39-37, in the third quarter.

The Keyser junior varsity team won 50-31 as Wesley Stullenbarger scored 14 points and Wes Washington 10. Ollie Douthitt had eight for Hampshire.

Keyser (8-6 overall, 5-5 AMAC) will play at Southern in a make-up game on Monday. Hampshire (1-14, 1-8) visits Northern on Saturday.

Keyser Gets By Trojans, 57-53

ROMNEY - Three players accounted for all but one point and Keyser survived a bad third quarter en route to a 57-53 victory over the Hampshire Trojans on Thursday evening in Romney.

Preston Hartman, Matt Wilmer and Jeremy Green combined for 56 points as the Golden Tornado improved their record to 8-6 on the year.

Hartman led the way with 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Wilmer added 20 points and Green had 14 points and 11 boards.


Cody Spotts chipped in with a team-high 5 assists.

Keyser took a 20-15 lead after the opening quarter and opened things up in the second frame, holding Hampshire to just 6 points to take a 32-21 lead at the half.

The Trojans returned the favor in the third quarter, holding the Golden Tornado to just 7 points to cut the Keyser lead to 39-37 heading into the final eight minutes.



But Keyser was able to hold off Hampshire in the fourth quarter, as the trio of Hartman, Green and Wilmer did just enough to secure the win.

Robbie Miller led Hampshire with 21 points, while Michael Clark added 10.

Will Hughes, who scored 29 points in Hampshire's 86-83 overtime loss to Keyser on Jan. 4, managed just 10 points on Thursday, with only 2 points coming after the first quarter.



Keyser also won the JV game, 50-31.

Wes Washington led Keyser with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 8 steals and 5 assists, while Wes Stullenbarger added 14 points and 4 steals.
